2009 PAST EVENTS

Camp GEMS was at the annual Canadian National Exhibition on Monday August 24th. The day started with the Dry Ice demonstrations; bringing out the ‘oohs’, ‘aahs’ and ‘wows’ from both children and their parents. After they were done playing with the Spooky Bubbles, the children were ready for a crash course on digestive system. The fun and interactive ‘Chew On This’ game had all the kids digging in the ‘food source’ to find the ‘nutrients’. The last activity for the day was where kids were asked to construct floating towers. This definitely had the kids, their parents and some of GEMS’ volunteers competing to finish the towers on time. After the amazing response from the first day, we are looking forward to next week. Don’t forget GEMS will be back at CNE on Monday August 31st, between 11:30am and 7pm. See you there!!!

On Saturday August 1st Camp GEMS was at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga for Muslimfest. All of the four workshops were filled happily with participants between the ages of 4 and 14 alongside some enthusiastic parents, ready to take part in the awesome activies. On this day, the workshops were open to both boys and girls. The workshops included Spa Science, Science Olympics, Scrub-a-dub-dub, and Chew on This! The children learned: how to make their very own bath products, the engineering behind designing a floating structure, the areas of our hands where germs like to reside (and how to ensure proper hand-washing!), and the wonders of our digestive system. See you next year! http://www.muslimfest.com/web/funvillage.aspx

On Saturday July 4th and Sunday July 5th, Camp GEMS participated in the Tastes of Lawrence Festival by providing hands-on experiments from the exciting world of engineering, math, and science. Children made their own take-home slime, experienced the wonders of dry ice, and were challenged to fit their entire body through an 8.5 x 11″ sheet of paper using only scissors! The weather was windy but a lot of fun was had! See you next year Scarborough! http://www.tasteoflawrence.com/kidszone.html
